Segment #8: Reinvent Self
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET.
One of the keys to productivity is to have the courage to do things differently. That is probably why many traditional organizations are constantly trying to reinvent their leadership models and redefine expectations. Strategizing means the ability to re-create daily, not just during the annual budget meeting at corporate headquarters. There’s a tendency for women to naturally know this. Rather than accept the comfort of apathy, they trust their own abilities, define their careers and demonstrate the self-discipline necessary to create the business of their dreams. For example, to reinvent you might consider changing departments to learn something new that adds a “star” to your resume. Or, if you feel like being wicked and wild, for fun, buy a wig.
- The question for the listener this week: How often do you reinvent yourself?
- Apathy is this week’s obstacle and the courage action to overcome this obstacle is “instill self-discipline.”
- Post prominently this week’s productivity quote by Anonymous: “No one has looked back sadly on a life full of experiences, but many look back wishing they had had the courage to do more.”
Segment #9: Live Cconvictions
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET.
One working woman told me that applying her courage at work requires that she demonstrate daily an unconditional commitment to her beliefs, values and ideals. This is not an easy commitment to maintain, especially if you are stuck in invisibility—an obstacle to courageous action. Are you willing to showcase your talents, take a chance, face failure, overcome rejection and say “No” to conformity (a courage killer)? Conformity compresses talent. The savvy working woman knows that there is a direct correlation between her courage quotient and success. Courage is organic. When you seek high standards that showcase your talents you learn to discriminate and refine your worth.
- The question for the listener this week: How do you showcase your talents, such as a soothing voice during turbulent conversations, holding yourself 100% accountability or illuminating compassion?
- Invisibility is this week’s obstacle and the courage action to overcome this obstacle is “showcase your talents.” Hiding in invisibility might be the easiest route at work, but stepping up to exemplify this courage action is critical for advancement, so showcase your talents.
- Post prominently this week’s productivity quote by Mary Daly, feminist, scholar, theologian and controversial writer, 1928-2010: “Courage is like—it’s a habitus, a habit, a virtue: you get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.”
Segment #6: Conquer fear
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET.
True fear is a survival signal that sounds only in the presence of danger; yet, our culture is stuck in the creation of dualities, such as courage or fear (pretty/ugly, peace/disaster or bad/good). In other words, our culture perpetuates, “You can’t have courage without fear.” Not true! If you go to work and learn your biggest client has gone to your competitor do you embrace the fear of uncertainty and let the ego take over in the form of projections, such as “Now I am going to go under…” At this propitious moment, observe your mental chatter so you can monitor the fearful feelings created by the false self. Fear blocks and paralyzes the heart; therefore, fear blocks courage.
- The question for the listener this week: What percentage of your life is filled with regret?
- Blame is this week’s obstacle and the courage action to overcome this obstacle is work without regrets. Exemplifying personal courage, a working woman refuses the easy path of blaming others and steps up to: Work without regrets.
- Post prominently this week’s productivity quote by an Unknown Author: “Fear, the worst of all enemies, can be effectively cured by forced repetitions of acts of courage.”
Segment #4: Reflect Self-Esteem
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET, starting July 21, 2010.
All your actions reflect who you are and what you stand for. If you’re repeating a certain behavior that you don’t like, don’t editorialize! Look inside and ask, “What old script needs adjusting?” To move out of an old “B movie” that old scripts inflict, sharpen your skills and abilities through education, reading and training, and surround yourself with the kind of people you want to learn from—the people that epitomize higher levels of courage consciousness.
Three Questions for the listener this week: (1) When was the last time you learned something new? (2) When was the last time you discarded an unhealthy relationship? (3) When was the last time you had a self-awareness insight?
- The answer to overcome the obstacle this week is self-doubt. Self-doubt keeps a woman in StuckThinking™. When it comes to defeating the incessant chatter that consumes our false self/ego and creates self-doubt, discover the crucial manifestation of the courage action that requires you to establish higher standards. That’s what former CEO Katherine Graham did when she courageously stepped up the leadership ladder to take over the Washington Post.
- Then, post prominently this week’s productivity quote by Clare Boothe Luce: “Courage is the ladder on which all the other virtues mount.”
Segment #7: Reveal Vulnerability
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET.
The storms that enter a courageous woman’s work life offer opportunities for an honest assessment of what I call the “vulnerability meter.” This vulnerability indicator comes in many forms, such as acknowledging unhappiness, learning to move on through disastrous events and learning not to manipulate failures or mistakes. While this may seem like a sensible behavior pattern for any working woman, the deeper truth is that revealing vulnerability represents integrity and authenticates the true Self (versus feeding the scripts of the false self). This choice is the opposite of hiding mistakes or a weakness while utilizing forms of manipulation. Manipulation is a negative energy that undermines integrity, breeds distrust and stifles “heart and spirit”—the meaning of courage. When we manipulate others to achieve our own goals, we have become stuck in uncourageous behavior patterns that undermines truth in order to perpetuate a false image. Revealing vulnerability, on the other hand, exposes a woman’s true nature refusing to get stuck in the ego’s self-serving illusions.
- The question for the listener this week: Are you willing to expose your “heart and spirit” that reflects your true Self?
- Manipulation is this week’s obstacle and the courage action to overcome this obstacle is “reveal your vulnerability.”
- Post prominently this week’s productivity quote by Mignon McLaughlin, “Courage can’t see around corners, but goes around them anyway.”
Segment #5: Speak up
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET.
People at work witness what we stand for, and straight (unambiguous) talk gets attention. Why? Because this type of candor is uncomfortable for most people. Most people are also stunned when they hear candor. And, candor is a cousin to courage. Speaking with courage means learning to speak with your own voice, to express the truth that flows from your own “heart and spirit.” This is the opposite of fearing ridicule or being ostracized. Only by learning to express ourselves from our own courageous identities can we begin to employ the courage action that moves us beyond this week’s obstacle. This week’s obstacle is ambiguity and confronting uncomfortable truths is the courage action that overcomes ambiguity. Instead of agreeing to things that we don’t want to do, we simply need to come from a place of choice and express our points of view without ambiguity.
This courageous task is easier said than done; yet, disclosing why you believe a situation is not desirable or not right for you requires a conscious choice action. Having what I call a “courageous conversation” means you are willing to rely on your courageous voice. A few everyday courage examples include challenging the status quo; another is making graceful waves when someone is putting you down or attempting to deter your passion. A courageous woman eventually learns how to integrate what I call “where courage meets grace.”
- Two questions for the listener this week: What keeps you from not having the courage to converse directly? Will you choose to declare your intent to speak your voice?
- Ambiguity is this week’s obstacle and the courage action to overcome this obstacle is “confront an uncomfortable truth.” Protecting your voice keeps a woman in StuckThinking™. Like painting or editing a book, centering in your courage is not an exact science. The business environment changes continually and courageous leaders know how to go with the changing flow. Recall the last time you directly confronted someone at work with an uncomfortable but consequential truth you had been avoiding.
- Post prominently this week’s productivity quote by Lily Tomlin said, “If you can’t be direct, why be?”
Segment #3: Manifest vision
Joy Rose is the Media Mom and Sandra Walston is known as The Courage Expert and innovator of StuckThinking™. Both courageous women collaborate on Joy’s online television segment aired every Wednesday night at 7:00 ET, starting July 21, 2010.
There are no shortcuts when it comes to manifesting career success, so it’s important to know where you want to go and develop a crystal clear vision of your intention (notice I didn’t write goals). Too me, intentions are more important than five year goal projections. One way to accomplish this is to develop your SQ (Spiritual Intelligence). For decades, IQ had always been the strong predictor of success in careers. Then, Daniel Goleman’s work on Emotional Intelligence (EQ) surfaced. The next level of indicator hovers around Dr. Danah Zohar’s work. Dana is a quantum physicist who lists 9 SQ characteristics in her book, SQ. One of the nine elements is called “Field Independence,” and it applies to courage. “Field Independence is a term from psychology that means the courage not to adapt, to be independent.”
How do you develop your SQ to reveal your courageous leadership? The answer: Learn to stay present! Then you can adeptly shift gears if the intention you set forth needs modification. Self-defeat is this week’s obstacle to courage. Imagine this: you are on a cruise chip to the Caribbean and the compass on the ship is off one degree! It doesn’t take long before you to end up in Africa! Is your vision off one degree?
- Question for the listener this week: What energy-zapper makes you feel defeated—the one that consistently keeps you from taking the next step up the leadership ladder?
- The obstacle for this week is self-defeat. Self-defeat keeps a woman in StuckThinking™. This answer to overcome this obstacle is “manifest a vision.” Are you willing to “Manifest a vision?” For example, Florence Nightingale was known as “The Lady with the Lamp.” Way ahead of her time, Florence had a vision about what nursing and hospitals should look like. Claiming the courage to manifest your vision will lift you out of self-defeat, empowering you, like Florence, to take the steps necessary to achieve results.
- Then, post prominently this week’s productivity quote by the famous author Harper Lee: “Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” I say, “You can take the step up the ladder in spite of the obstacles that attempt to thwart feminine courage.”

Segment #2: Hurdle obstacles and take risks

Every behavior a courageous woman exhibits is a choice. There is a big difference between knee-jerk reactions, being foolhardy and applying courage consciousness. Choose the risks you take so you can creatively navigate your way around, through, or over any obstacles that cross your path. Courageous women know that mediocrity is the kiss of death, so take the risk and step up to the next rung of the ladder (even though that step might feel like double steps), such as attending a networking function where you most likely won’t know a soul or learning a new software that everyone else knows but you’re the rookie. These examples can be intimidating.
- Question for the listener: What would make me feel intimidated to take the next step? Intimidation blocks a woman’s ability to step up and reveal her courage action?
- The answer to overcome the obstacle of intimidation that keeps a woman in StuckThinking™ whether the behavior is from a peer or an internal script is this: Are you willing to “Take on the tough project.” If you accepted productivity tip #1 from last week which was to “give yourself permission to claim your courage,” then tosh out intimidation and invite a tough project such as requesting a project you’re ready to take on.
- Then, post prominently this week’s productivity quote by Erma Bombeck said: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and I could say: ‘I used everything you gave me’.”

Segment #1: Affirm strength and determination
A courageous woman has learned that courage is acquired by conscious design and that you strengthen it, step by step, choice by choice. One of the twelve obstacles to courage is inertia. If you fall into a pothole, how long does it take you to get out?
Question for the listeners: How do you overcome inertia–a blockage to courage action?
The answer to overcome the obstacle of inertia is the most critical to start a journey sustainable in courageous leadership. Ask yourself this critical question: are you willing to “Give yourself permission to claim your courage?”
The quote to prominently post for the week: “She who hesitates before each step spends her life on one leg.”
